What are phobias, and how are they different from fears?
A fear is a natural reaction to danger, whether that danger be a physical danger, or sometimes an emotional danger.... so for example, we may be frightened if we're suddenly confronted by a dangerous dog.
A phobia, although it sometimes feels very similar to the feeling of fear, is a reaction to something that doesn't actually, in itself, present a real threat.
So, for example, someone might get the same sort of fear reaction, but instead of it being caused by a ferocious dog, it might be caused by an innocuous object like a spider or a button on clothing, or by a situation, such as feeling sick, or driving over a high bridge.
Although the sufferer of a phobia may feel that their feelings are 'irrational', they still can't help the way they feel.
People will often avoid objects or situations that cause their 'phobic reaction'.
If they are confronted by the object or situation that is at the focus of their phovbia, they can often have feelings of strong, often overwhelming feelings of anxiety, panic and often, of losing control.
People with a phobia, in order to avoid this, will often modify their life in such a way that it reduces their chances of coming into contact with that object or situation.
Using hypnotherapy as a treatment for fears and phobias
Certain types of hypnotherapy can be very successful in helping people to overcome their problem, and it does it in such a way, that you can do so at your own pace, so need never feel overwhelmed.
